What to do in the first week after being fired
A practical checklist for California employees who have just lost their job and suspect the termination was unfair.
Losing a job is stressful, and the days right after a termination are when important details are easiest to lose. This checklist is general information, not legal advice.
1. Write down what happened
Note the date, who was in the meeting, the reason you were given, and anything that happened in the weeks before — complaints you made, leave you requested, changes in how you were treated.
2. Keep what you already have
Save copies of documents that are already yours: offer letter, pay stubs, schedules, performance reviews and personal messages. Do not take confidential company material you are not entitled to.
3. Check your final pay
In California, final wages are generally due at the time of termination. If something is missing or late, write it down.
4. Do not wait
Employment claims have deadlines. Talking to an employment attorney early keeps your options open.
